Listing rules
Proper 4x4s.
Proper adverts.
4x4 House is a curated marketplace for privately owned pickups, capable 4x4s and specialist overland vehicles. These rules explain what belongs here and what every seller must provide.
5 September 2026
Every advert is reviewed before publication. Submission or payment does not create an automatic right to be listed. These rules form part of our Terms and Conditions, which take priority if there is any conflict.
What belongs on 4x4 House?
The badge, body type or presence of all-wheel drive does not decide eligibility. We look at the particular model, generation, configuration and its relevance to specialist 4x4 buyers.
Vehicles built for more
- Pickup trucks and utility 4x4s
- Traditional, capable off-road vehicles
- Overland and expedition builds based on an eligible platform
- Relevant modified, classic and imported 4x4s
- Complete projects and non-runners with their condition fully disclosed
Four driven wheels are not enough
- Ordinary road-focused SUVs and crossovers, including vehicles such as the BMW X5
- Cars that happen to have all-wheel drive
- Dealer stock, trade adverts and commercial breaker stock
- Loose parts, accessories, wanted adverts, raffles and services
- Vehicles outside the United Kingdom or not genuinely available
Would a private buyer specifically looking for a capable pickup, proper 4x4 or overland vehicle reasonably expect to find it here? If the answer is unclear, ask us before creating the advert. Suitability is decided by 4x4 House and examples are not exhaustive.
The five listing categories
We assign each advert to the category that best represents the vehicle. We may correct or change a category so search results remain useful.
Pickup trucks
Single, extended and double-cab pickups used for work, leisure, towing or off-road travel.
4x4s
Traditional and genuinely capable four-wheel-drive vehicles, whether standard or lightly upgraded.
Overland & expedition
Travel-ready builds with meaningful touring, camping, storage, power or self-sufficiency equipment.
Modified & classic
Purpose-built off-road vehicles, notable modifications and older specialist 4x4s.
Imports & unusual
Legally imported, rare or unusual trucks and 4x4s that fit the marketplace.
Who may advertise
Genuinely private means private
4x4 House is not another dealer forecourt. It is for individuals selling vehicles they own, or people with clear authority to sell for an owner, estate or family member.
You must be the owner or have clear permission and legal authority to advertise and sell it. We may request evidence before publication.
Dealers, brokers, buying services, commercial breakers and anyone acting wholly or mainly for business purposes may not advertise as private sellers.
Repeated adverts, recently acquired vehicles, multiple seller identities or other advertising may lead us to ask questions or decline an account.
Do not create duplicate adverts, advertise something already sold or use a vehicle advert merely to collect enquiries for other stock or services.
Disclose what a buyer needs to know
An honest advert includes inconvenient facts as well as good ones. Leaving out something material can be just as misleading as making a false statement.
Identity & specification
Give the correct make, model, variant, year, chassis or generation where useful, engine, transmission, drive system and genuine mileage.
Condition & faults
State warning lights, mechanical and electrical faults, significant corrosion, chassis repairs, accident damage, leaks, smoke and known roadworthiness issues.
History & status
State MOT and service history accurately. Disclose write-off history, outstanding finance, mileage discrepancies, replacement chassis and import history.
Modifications
List suspension or body lifts, engine work, emissions changes, wheel and tyre changes, winches, bumpers, lighting and any insurance-relevant modification.
Payload & towing
Do not guess towing capacity, payload or plated weights. Describe tow equipment, load-bed equipment and anything included in the sale accurately.
Project & salvage vehicles
Projects and non-runners must be complete vehicle adverts with their condition made obvious. Parts-only, breaking and vehicles required to be destroyed are not accepted.
Present the actual vehicle properly
Good photographs and a useful description build trust. Copied, vague or misleading content will delay approval and may be rejected.
Title & description
- Use the title format Make, Model, Variant, Year.
- Write in plain English and describe the vehicle as it is now.
- Explain ownership, use, maintenance, equipment, modifications and faults.
- Do not use false urgency, unprovable claims, excessive capitals or misleading keywords.
- Do not hide a deposit as the full price or describe estimates as documented history.
Photographs & video
- Upload clear, recent photographs of the vehicle being sold.
- Show every side, cabin, dashboard, mileage, load area, wheels, chassis where visible and any damage.
- Use a clean landscape image of the whole vehicle as the first photograph.
- Do not use stock images, screenshots, heavy filters, copied photographs or unrelated watermarks.
- Hide addresses, document reference numbers, financial details and other unnecessary personal information.
Price & VAT
- Show the genuine total asking price in pounds sterling.
- Private adverts must not use a false low price to manipulate search results.
- State VAT status accurately and do not add VAT unless legally entitled to do so.
- An advert quoting a price plus VAT will be reviewed because 4x4 House currently accepts private sellers only.
- Do not advertise a raffle, competition, finance product or auction as a normal sale.
Location & privacy
- Enter the town and county where the vehicle can genuinely be viewed.
- Do not put your exact home address in the public advert.
- Do not upload a full V5C, driving licence, bank details or photographs containing keys and security information.
- Share a viewing address privately only after you are satisfied that the enquiry is genuine.
- Vehicles outside the United Kingdom are not currently accepted.
Review, publication and renewal
Our review improves the quality of the marketplace, but publication is not a mechanical inspection, history check, warranty or endorsement.
You submit
Complete every relevant field, upload suitable photographs and check that all material information is included.
We review
We may correct presentation, request evidence or clarification, change the category, reject the vehicle or return the advert for improvement.
You maintain it
Keep the advert accurate. Update changes promptly and mark it sold or remove it as soon as the vehicle is unavailable.
You renew it
Free adverts normally run for up to 30 days. Renewal requires confirmation that the vehicle remains available and the information is current.
A featured advert, boost or managed service remains subject to these rules. We may pause or remove an advert that is false, misleading, ineligible or unsafe. Payment does not buy approval, immunity from moderation or a guaranteed sale. Refunds are handled under the Terms and Conditions.
